Understanding Insurance for Therapy: A Simple Guide
Navigating the insurance process for therapy can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to make it as easy as possible. Follow these simple steps to determine if your insurance will cover your therapy sessions and what to do if they don’t. Please note, as a client, you will need to verify with your insurance that we are in your network. Consociate often requires preauthorization. We are unable to bill HMO's. Not all clinicians are in every network. Please contact your provider to ensure your preferred clinician is in network with your insurance company.
Steps to Check If Your Insurance Covers Therapy
1. Call Your Insurance Provider:
Start by calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. Ask them if they cover mental health or behavioral health services.
2. Ask Key Questions
When speaking with your insurance provider, ask the following questions:
- Do I have mental health coverage?
- What’s my co-pay or deductible for therapy sessions?
- How many therapy sessions are covered per year?
- Do I need pre-authorization or a referral from a primary care provider?
- Are there specific in-network therapists I need to see?
3. Verify We are In Network
See the list of insurance providers we accept below.
4. Submit Claims (If Needed)
If we are out-of-network but insurance still provides some coverage, you may need to submit claims directly to your insurance company for reimbursement. We can help you with this process.
What to Do If Insurance Won’t Cover Your Therapy
1. Explore Out-of-Pocket Options
If insurance won’t cover your therapy, ask your therapist what their out-of-pocket rates are.
2. Use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
If you have an HSA or FSA, you can use these pre-tax funds to cover therapy costs. Check with your insurance provider to ensure therapy is an eligible expense.
